KAREN Architecture Working Group and a new KAREN RFC

Another significant step forward in community-led evolution of KAREN took place today with the publication of the Charter of the Architecture Working Group and the opening for comment of the KAREN Architecture Development Framework.

The Charter of the Architecture Working Group has been published on the KAREN Wiki. This Charter describes the community membership of the Working Group as well as, its role, scope and goals.

Associated with this Charter, the Working Group has drafted the initial KARENRFC describing the proposed Architecture Development Framework and posted that on the KARENRFC page for the community to comment.

Outline of Aaron’s presentation

A document repository or web application portal similar to Google Docs (i.e. KAREN Docs). Many members of BeSTGRID/KAREN have their own internal repositories, but each institution has its own solution and are often closed to external access (esp. for those of use forced to use SharePoint due to Microsoft licensing restrictions which require extra license fees for external users, and prohibit implementing a ‘competing’ solution).

A code repository similar to GitHub, Gitorious or Google Code. We have some projects where scientific models have external contributors (and consumers) who are wary of using public repositories.

The assumption would be that these services would use the BeSTGRID authentication systems, or the services put up by the MoRST IAM project.

Have your say on collaboration and infrastructure

The KAREN Services Working Group is opening their May meeting up to all KAREN members to get your input on collaboration and shared infrastructure services over KAREN.

About collaboration and infrastructure services – Services Working Group May meeting

The KAREN Services Working Group would like to invite any and all KAREN members with a particular interest in the investigation and development of new Collaboration Services and Shared Infrastructure Services to participate in their May meeting.

Nick Jones from the University of Auckland will lead the discussions around Collaboration Services and is well qualified to do so with his previous experience of developing, implementing, and working with collaboration technologies.

This meeting will be held by video conference on Tuesday 11 May at 2pm.

The KAREN Services Working Group brings together interested parties from KAREN member organisations to discuss requirements for value-added services over KAREN. For more information about the objectives of the Services Working Group visit the KAREN Wiki.

Services Working group gets underway

REANNZ recently established two Working Groups bringing together representatives from academia, science and information technology from across our Membership to provide an agreed, community-owned way forward on the development of KAREN and associated services.

The first Working Group to get underway was the Services Working Group who held their inaugural meeting on 2 December. Representatives from 12 Member organisations met via video conference to understand how they can take KAREN usage to the next level through the sharing and development of services over KAREN.

KAREN, by its very nature, enables collaboration and lends itself to shared tools, applications and services. The KAREN Services Working Group aims to understand how the community can increase the value of KAREN further by sharing the existing resources available over KAREN and clubbing together to develop shared services where gaps exist in the portfolio.

The Services Working Group was quick off its feet and at this meeting decided as its first action to develop a national catalogue of existing services in New Zealand and a roadmap for new services by the middle of 2010.

The Architecture Working Group will hold its first meeting early first year.
