NZNOG 2013

Doing something interesting in the Internetworking space? Submit a paper and be in to win a trip to Singapore.

The NZNOG organising committee invites papers for its 12th annual conference, to be hosted at the Mercure Hotel, Wellington, New Zealand from 21 – 25 January 2013.  There will be three days of Workshops (21 – 23 January), a day of tutorials (23 January) with the main conference on 24 – 25 January.

The NZNOG conference, workshops and tutorials are a once-a-year opportunity for individuals and organisations involved in Internet operations to meet and share the latest in Internet operations, technologies practises and receive high quality training.

The event is unique in New Zealand and attracts technical, skilled individuals with a genuine interest in Internet operations and Internetworking technologies.

Presenters are invited to submit abstracts of their paper for consideration by Monday 5 November. The best national paper – as judged by a selection of members from the organising team – will win return flights from New Zealand, accommodation, and conference fees to the next APRICOT conference in Singapore.

More details on paper submission can be found at http://www.nznog.org/call-for-papers.

Science DMZ Workshop

REANNZ and NeSI together bringing you the Science DMZ

We are sometimes faced with datasets too large to email. We resort to saving large datasets on hard drives to courier across the country, rather than sending them across the network. This is increasingly unnecessary, and is easily resolved. Institutions that adopt contemporary network configurations and data transfer services, are able to reap the benefits of high speed research networks to quickly transfer large datasets.

REANNZ and NeSI will demonstrate the effect of carefully configured data transfer services atop a well tuned research network at the eResearch Symposium VUW 4-6th July. You will see the differences that can easily be made to data transfer performance, and even learn how to optimise your institutes network connection for large data transfers. However this is only part of the picture – gain access to large data transfer tools and learn more about the data transfer services available, including programmable transfers, and easy to use tools available today researchers in NZ.

For those technically minded, the network approach we’re demonstrating is a prototype of a Science DMZ network architecture and uses a performance-testing tool, perfSONAR, to identify bottlenecks. Atop this, we’re working with GridFTP and GlobusOnline for data transfers. Come talk to the engineers involved from both REANNZ and NeSI to learn more.

If you are attending the Symposium please come along to our booth or workshop, we look forward to seeing you there.

If you are not able to get to Wellington for this, please contact us and we’ll be happy to talk with you.

KAREN Seminar: IPv6 for real-time musical collaboration

Join us on Tuesday 26 July when Associate Professor Ian Whalley will share his experiences of spearheading the use of IPv6 for international electroacoustic music collaboration.

Technology enables new forms of musical collaboration

Ian Whalley from the University of Waikato is leading the charge in the application of advanced networks and IPv6 for music performance collaboration. He recently collaborated with musicians in China and Canada in a real-time, live musical performance over a distance of 30,000 kilometres.

Advanced networks, through real-time digital audio and HD video, provide the opportunity for electroacoustic music practitioners to connect with, bridge, amalgamate, and lead diverse sound-based music traditions; facilitating new hybrid sonic art forms. The presentation covers how KAREN (and our relationships with Internet2 and other NRENs around the globe) makes this possible, some of the technical issues faced with using IPv6, and then a example work is put forward to illustrate various points made.

For more, you can read the full case study about Ian’s research and performance.

How to participate

This event is being held 3:30 – 4:30, Tuesday 26 July 2011 via the KAREN Video Conferencing Service. You can find video conferencing connection details on our event calendar.

KAREN Seminar: What next for the eResearch Framework?

Join Julian Carver and Julie Watson on Tuesday 3 May to discuss initial findings from their February/March workshops on the Framework for eResearch Adoption.

Framework for eResearch Adoption – what have we learned, what do we do next?

Over February and March this year, Julian Carver held workshops with research institutions across the country to gather input into the Framework for eResearch adoption -  a plan to help improve research through increased uptake and use of eResearch tools and methods.

At this session Julian Carver and Julie Watson will convey the range of views and ideas from across the sector, and describe the common patterns that are emerging. During the video conference you’ll have a chance to comment and discuss the emerging framework for eResearch adoption, and provide input into how it takes shape at a national level.

For more information on the project see: http://www.eresearch.org.nz/fera

This event is being held via the KAREN Video Conferencing Service on 3:30 – 4:30pm, Tuesday 3 May 2011.

eResearch Symposium: Contributions deadline extended

The organisers of the 2011 eResearch Symposium have received many requests for leniency! So they’ve agreed, in fairness to all, to extend the deadline for contributions to Thursday 21 April 2011.

Call for contributions

The organisers are still accepting submissions of descriptions for presentations, posters, workshops and demonstrations. Descriptions will be final, with no additional articles required. Submissions should address any aspect of eResearch, including the infrastructure, platforms, middleware, services; and use-cases from the sciences, humanities, engineering, social sciences and medical fields.

On ramp to KAREN: Reminder

Reminder to join us for the On ramp to KAREN seminar today where Julian Carver will present on this MoRST and REANNZ supported project to develop a framework to help increase the adoption of eResearch services, capability and infrastructure.

About this seminar

At 3:30pm today, Julian Carver will lead a seminar on the MoRST and REANNZ supported project to develop a framework to help increase the adoption of eResearch services, capability and infrastructure. MoRST’s  wants to provide a pragmatic approach to understanding the factors that will assist and encourage research teams to use KAREN and other eResearch services. These factors are likely to include:

  • policy guidance
  • in house support services
  • good practice in research data management
  • and other tools and services

Two KAREN Member seminars this week

We’re hosting two seminars this week covering radio astronomy in New Zealand and protocols for fast data transfer over KAREN with Sergei Gulyaev, and an international perspective on the challenges of high-speed networks and education with Dr Jesus Lau. All KAREN members are welcome to join us for these community seminars.

1:30pm, 22 November – Research networks and education seminar with Dr Jesus Lau

REANNZ and the National Library of New Zealand invite you to join us for a seminar presented by Dr Jesus Lau, of the University of Veracruz, Mexico on Monday 22 November 2010. Dr Lau is in New Zealand as part of the centenary celebrations of LIANZA. In this session for KAREN members, Dr Lau will describe opportunities and challenges of high-speed networks and their relevance to education, in Mexico and more broadly in Latin America.

See our Research networks and education event listing for more details.

3:30pm, 24 November – KAREN: Window to the Universe
